Avoid Summer Burn Out

A reminder to slow down, stay nourished and make space for rest

Summer has a way of making us feel like we should be doing everything.

The days are longer. Calendars fill with trips, events, dinners, outdoor activities and plans with friends. There’s pressure to get outside, stay active, work on our bodies, be social and somehow still keep up with everything else in our lives.

It can be a beautiful season.

It can also be exhausting.

At Jungle Mama, we believe wellness includes knowing when to do less. Summer doesn’t have to become another season of pushing yourself. Your herbal and wellness routines can help you create moments of nourishment and rest within all that summer energy.

Longer Days Don't Require Fuller Days

More daylight can make it tempting to stretch our schedules right along with it.

But an extra few hours of sunlight don't have to become extra hours of productivity.

Leave some room in your summer.

Spend an evening at home. Sit outside without needing to accomplish anything. Take a slow morning when your schedule allows it. Give yourself permission to enjoy a beautiful day without turning it into an itinerary. Rest doesn't have to wait until you're completely exhausted.

Keep Nourishment Simple

When life gets busy, nourishing ourselves can quickly become another complicated task.

Summer is a good time to simplify. Keep fresh fruit washed and ready to grab. Prepare a pitcher of herbal infusion and store it in the refrigerator. Build easy meals around colorful seasonal produce, grains, beans, nuts, seeds and fresh herbs. You don't need every meal to be elaborate. Sometimes a nourishing routine works because it's easy enough to repeat. The same is true for herbs. Instead of trying to incorporate several different herbal preparations every day, choose one or two rituals you genuinely enjoy.

Maybe it's iced hibiscus tea with lunch.

Maybe it's adding fresh mint to your water.

Maybe it's ending the evening with lemon balm tea.

Simple still counts.

Create a Cooling Ritual

There is something special about having a small ritual that signals to your body that the busy part of the day is over. During summer, make that ritual something refreshing. Brew hibiscus or peppermint tea and let it chill in the refrigerator. Pour it over ice. Add fresh fruit or herbs. Take your drink outside and give yourself ten minutes without your phone, emails or another task waiting in front of you.

Your ritual doesn't need to be complicated to feel intentional. Sometimes the act of preparing something for yourself is the ritual.

Pay Attention to Your Energy

Our energy isn't meant to feel exactly the same every day.

Some summer mornings you'll wake up ready to move, explore and get things done. Other days, the heat alone may make you want to slow down. Listen to that. Wellness is about developing enough awareness to recognize when something needs to shift.

Maybe today's workout becomes a walk.

Maybe dinner becomes something simple instead of the recipe you planned.

Maybe your evening plans become an early night at home.

Being flexible with yourself doesn't mean you've fallen out of your routine.

It means you're paying attention.

Let Summer Be Soft, Too

Summer is often associated with energy, adventure and movement. But it can also be a season of softness. Bare feet in the grass. Fruit eaten outside. A cold herbal infusion after a long day. An afternoon nap. A morning without an alarm. Watching the sunset instead of scrolling through your phone.

There will always be something else you could be doing. Your wellness doesn't come from fitting all of it in.

Sometimes it comes from deciding what can wait.
