5 herbs to keep close as the days get warmer

Summer has its own rhythm—and your herbal cabinet can too.

As the weather gets warmer, we naturally start reaching for things that feel lighter, fresher and easier. This is also a great time to refresh the way you use herbs. A warm cup of tea can become an iced infusion, while herbs can find their way into water, meals, snacks and everyday summer rituals.

A simple herbal cabinet is all you need to begin. Choose a handful of versatile herbs that you genuinely enjoy using and let them become part of your daily routine.

Here are five we're keeping close this summer.

1. Hibiscus

Hibiscus brings summer to life with its vibrant color and bright, tart flavor.

Its infusion tastes almost cranberry-like and turns a beautiful deep red as it steeps. Enjoy it chilled on its own or pair it with lime, berries, mint or a little natural sweetener.

Try brewing a pitcher in the evening, refrigerating it overnight and pouring it over ice the next day.

It’s an easy way to turn an everyday drink into an herbal ritual.

2. Nettle

Nettle brings an earthy, nourishing quality to a summer herbal cabinet.

Nettle leaf is naturally rich in plant compounds and nutrients, with a mild flavor that blends easily with other herbs.

Try preparing a longer infusion and drinking it chilled, or pair nettle with brighter herbs when you want something more refreshing.

Summer herbalism can be fruity and sweet, or it can offer a simple, nourishing moment in your day.

3. Peppermint

Peppermint is one of those herbs that's incredibly easy to work into everyday life.

Brew it alone for a refreshing iced tea, combine it with hibiscus, add fresh mint leaves to fruit or infuse them into your water.

It's also a lovely herb to keep around when you want something simple after a meal.

If you're new to herbs, mint is a welcoming place to start because its flavor already feels familiar.

4. Lemon Balm

Summer can be exciting and full of possibility, while longer days can also bring fuller calendars and more plans.

Lemon balm is one of our favorite herbs to incorporate into a slower evening ritual.

Make yourself a cup of lemon balm tea, step away from your phone and give yourself a few minutes to transition out of the day.

Your summer apothecary can support your slower moments too.

5. Ginger

Ginger brings warmth, brightness and versatility to summer recipes and drinks.

Use fresh ginger in homemade dressings, juices, smoothies and meals, or pair a small amount with hibiscus and citrus for a more complex iced herbal drink.

That's one of the beautiful things about building an herbal apothecary: the same plant can take on an entirely different role depending on how you prepare it.

Use the Herbs You Choose

Herbs become most useful when they move from the cabinet into your everyday routines.

Choose a few and take time to get to know them.

Taste them individually.

Try them hot and cold.

Experiment with different combinations.

Add them to foods you already make.

Notice which ones you naturally reach for again.

Herbalism becomes much more approachable when you focus on building a relationship with the plants you actually use. This summer, your apothecary can be simple.

A few herbs. A pitcher in the refrigerator. Fresh ingredients in the kitchen. And a little curiosity about what you can create.
