    Blue Vervain (Verbena hastate, simpler's joy, verbena)

     

    ACTIONS: Anti-inflammatory, Antispasmodic (relieve spasm of involuntary muscle), Antimalarial, Antimicrobial, Diaphoretic, Diuretic, Galactagogue (increase milk supply), Hepatic (aid in liver health), Hypotensive (lowering blood pressure), Nervine, Sedative.

     

    MEDICINAL USES: Vervain is a gentle anxiolytic (used to reduce anxiety). It is helpful for easing depression and melancholia, especially after debilitating illness like influenza. Vervain may be beneficial in seizure and hysteria.

     

    As a diaphoretic, it can be used in early stages of fevers. As a hepatic remedy, it is appropriate for jaundice and inflammation of the gallbladder. It has been traditionally used to treat menstrual cramps and as an emmenagogue to increase milk production in breastfeeding women.

     

    PREPARATION & DOSAGE: To make an infusion (drinking tea), pour 1 cup of boiling water over 2 teaspoons of dried herb and infuse for 10-15 minutes, 3x daily.
