Feed Your Skin: Beauty From the Inside Out

A holistic approach to nourishing healthy, glowing skin

Beautiful skin is nourished in more places than the bathroom cabinet. It’s supported by the foods on your plate, the water in your glass, the plants in your herbal cabinet, the oils you massage into your skin and the everyday rituals that help you care for yourself.

At Jungle Mama, we love approaching beauty as part of whole-body wellness. Skin care can be both internal and external—giving your body the nutrients it needs while creating simple botanical rituals that nourish your skin from the outside. Here are a few ways to bring a more holistic approach to your beauty routine.

Fill Your Plate With Color

Colorful plant foods bring an incredible variety of nutrients and plant compounds to your plate.

Berries, leafy greens, sweet potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, citrus, bell peppers, avocados, nuts and seeds all offer different nutrients that contribute to overall health, including nutrients involved in maintaining normal skin.

An easy place to start is simply adding more color.

Top breakfast with berries. Add leafy greens to lunch. Roast colorful vegetables for dinner. Keep fresh fruit ready for snacks.

Instead of searching for one perfect "beauty food," create variety throughout the week.

Your plate can become part of your beauty ritual.

Remember Your Healthy Fats

Healthy fats deserve a place in a skin-supportive diet too. Foods like avocado, walnuts, chia seeds, flaxseeds, hemp seeds and other nuts and seeds provide essential fatty acids along with other nutrients.

Try adding ground flax or hemp seeds to breakfast, blending nut or seed butter into a smoothie, sprinkling seeds over a salad or adding avocado to a grain bowl. These little additions can build into a nourishing routine over time.

Hydrate With Plants

Make your daily hydration a little more beautiful.

Keep fresh fruit, cucumber or mint nearby to add to water. Brew colorful herbal infusions and keep them chilled in the refrigerator. Enjoy water-rich foods like melon, berries, oranges, cucumber and leafy greens.

  • Hibiscus makes a vibrant addition to a hydration ritual and contains naturally occurring plant compounds, including anthocyanins and other polyphenols.

  • Nettle is another plant traditionally enjoyed as a nourishing herbal infusion.

Choose a beautiful glass, add ice and fresh herbs, and make your afternoon drink something you look forward to.

Bring Botanicals Into Your Skin-Care Ritual

Plants can also become part of the way you care for your skin externally.

Botanical oils and infused oils can be used to create simple body-care rituals. Herbs such as calendula are commonly incorporated into botanical skin preparations, while rose has a long history of use in beauty and body care.

You can make the experience as important as the product itself. After bathing, take a few minutes to slowly massage a body oil into damp skin. Pay attention to areas that tend to feel dry, like your hands, elbows, knees and feet. A few intentional minutes can turn moisturizing into a ritual.

Give Your Skin a Fresh Start at Night

Your evening routine is another opportunity to care for your skin. Cleanse away the day, moisturize and give your skin time to settle while you settle too. Pair your skin-care routine with another evening ritual you enjoy: preparing herbal tea, stretching, reading, dimming the lights or putting your phone away.

Beauty rituals can become little signals that the day is winding down.

Make Beauty Feel Like Care

Holistic beauty becomes especially meaningful when it feels less like chasing a particular appearance and more like caring for the body you live in every day.

  • Nourish yourself well.

  • Drink something refreshing.

  • Eat colorful plants.

  • Massage oil into your skin.

  • Get outside.

  • Rest.

Learn which botanicals you enjoy using and create rituals that fit naturally into your life.

Your beauty routine can be an extension of your herbal lifestyle—rooted in plants, nourishment and the simple pleasure of taking care of yourself.
